Bye Bye Holland, Hello Switzerland!

We did leave the Netherlands with some sadness in our hearts, first and foremost we would miss the great people we met. I cannot believe how many friendly people have welcomed us into their home and been so hospitable. We have been stuggling to pay for anything when we go out for coffee, or a bus ticket or anything... the only time we do is when we get out by ourselves. It feels wrong to accept all the wonderful generosity, but it is greatly appeciated! Our NZ dollar is a poor traveller.

In our last days Rick and I went to the koekenhof (an amazing blooming of the tulips 2 months a year), the beach, dinner and cafe's and Amsterdam again. Amsterdam was an 'interesting' experience this time round, where we ventured somewhat deeper into the famed cities talking points. On our list was the Rijk's Museum, where we have seen first hand many works of a fine artist Rembrandt. Next was a better look at the Red-light district and *censored*. Then off to a coffee shop to waste our euro's. Funny times though... I will not go into great detail!

Now though we are sitting on a balcony in the middle of Basel, at Irina's house about 4-5 stories high. It is absolutely amazing here, and I absolutely love Switzerland. Irina has welcomed us with open arms, and I can't tell you how good it is to see her. I have been running in the mornings and this place is ... wow! You all must come here. She has a great plan for us for the next few days and we will see Sibyllas family and friends on Sunday. The river Rhein is large and very cold. We have also just been invited by Irina's flatmate Inga to a few days in a mountainous cabin with no electricity in a few weeks time. That is a definate must-experience!
Well dinner is served and will write more later! Bye for now!

    :P

Glad you have 'experienced' Amsterdam as now you'll know where to take the rest of us .. right? :P

Say hi to Irena for me, and strength to you all for the weekend.

and what do you mean you "won't go into great detail" about your funny times? I can't see any details at all!

and is Irina's (at least I spelt her name right this time - sorry Irina!) house 4.5 stories high? Ohhh!! Just like Platform 9 and three quarters?

and famed cities? wow! how many Amsterdams are there?

    ....

please forgive me. Our entertainment here is limited. I live with a linguist who is five weeks out from her thesis being due. I've just worked a nine hour day from 7am plus had a 2 hour meeting at Massey.

It's Friday, OdESSA is playing in town and we are sitting at home sewing and eating custard tarts.

What has my post-study life come to?

Cant wait for the pickies on this one. Please send our love to Irina. Did you ever imagine yourself going for a run in Switzerland? What an experience.

Hope the flight was good. Perhaps they need physios and teachers in Switzerland?

    Mind the avalanches.

Tell us more about the place - the houses, the food, the people....
We're living this through you guys - thanks for keeping the blogs going.

You do realise I was taking the piss out of your "mountainous cabin"?

A mountainous cabin. Just picture it. Even I have to admit it really is a powerful image. (watch The Fast Show).

Don't you mean "cabin in a mountainous area"?

    You're so cute :)

(ps mummyk is right. We love how much you've been blogging and the photos are great).

    Are the photos still Amsterdam?
(The bicycles probably are the giveaway)
Went the the May Day concert last night - Beck's choir gave an awesome performance. I sat with Mike and Gin who were great company. We also enjoyed two great dance items by the Red Hot Bitches of Wellington - a sort of social dance group that enjoys taking the piss. Hope today with Sibylla's parents goes ok - we will be thinking of you heaps.
    xx

Went for my first walk after the marathon today... but it was okee. Looks like the weather has changed for the better. Ineke said that it was lovely in Vijfhuizen as well. Take care both of you. Love from Zwart& Co

    Hey Guys

Feel like I'm reliving my own European adventures thru you both :) In Amsterdam, we "biked a dyke". Initially was a bit dubious what this might entail, but loved biking over the "dams" on our "Famous Five" bikes. They can get some speed up!!! And one of my most special memories of Switzerland was walking back from the Trummelbech Falls (not sure if my spelling is the flashest!!) through magestic mountains, and hearing cow-bells!!!! When I first heard it, i just stopping in my tracks and looked up expecting to see Heidi chasing Peter down the hillside. It was awesome!!! Sounds like you're just lapping up all each place has to offer, awesome!!! :) Plenty of time to find work and re-plenish the funds :) Loving the read guys. Thanks. Miss you and love you heaps
